It has a global orientation, employing more than 46, 000 staff committed to serving healthcare professionals and patients in over 100 countries. It is headquartered in the United Kingdom (UK)-the first GE business segment outside the United States. It has a turnover of approximately $ 17 billion. The headquarters hosts GE healthcare corporate offices as well as finance, sales, global sourcing departments, X-Ray marketing, manufacturing, design and shipping. The finance and sales departments at the headquarters handle GE Healthcares high level decisions, but each modality often has its own similar departments. The global sourcing department handles all purchasing for the firm. Clinical Systems Unit. Also Headquartered in the US, this business offers a variety of healthcare services and technological solutions for medical officers and managers of healthcare systems. These include; Ultrasound, technologies for monitoring patients, bone densitometry, incubators, respiratory care and management of anesthesia. GE Healthcare Life Sciences Unit. This is headquartered in Sweden. It produces technologies for discovering drugs, biopharmaceutical manufacturing and cellular technologies. This division also manufactures equipment for the purifying biopharmaceuticals. GE Healthcare Surgery Business Unit. This division offers equipment and technologies for surgical care interventions, cardiac, systems and technologies for diagnostic monitoring, systems and data management technologies, to systems for mobile fluoroscopic imaging, instrumentations on 3D visual systems and navigation. This calls for competitive strategies in order to remain competitive. This section evaluates the opportunities and challenges presented by GE Healthcare organizational structure. In the Financial Year (FY) ending December 2007, the company recorded revenues of $16, 997 million; an increase of 2.7% over 2006. The operating profit was $3,056 million in 2007; drop of 2.7% from 2006. This GE business unit recorded revenues of $16,015 million, during the Financial Year (FY) ended December 2009. This reflected a decrease of 7.9% over FY 2008. The operating profit for the FY ended December 2009 was $2,240 million a decrease of 15.1% over FY 2008. Analysts attribute to both the complex internal and external environments of the company. I evaluate this argument by undertaking a SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) analysis of the company and integrating it to the Porters Fiv e Forces Model. Internal Analysis GE healthcare is one of the best firms in leadership development. The firms Human Resources Department is keen in developing a strong workforce that responds to changing global needs. It employs strategically employs and motivates the best qualified talents globally. It invests more than $100 million annually on educational training and staff development. The GE Healthcare Institute provides advanced training for GEHC employees and customers. It combines Technical training, Applications and Leadership trainings. More than 70 laboratories with the latest equipment provide GE and customers world class instruction in all areas of equipment maintenance and operation. The Training in Partnership curriculum provides a full range of training programs. GE managers are considered one of the firms distinctive competencies and strengths. The challenge is maintaining employee motivation through better remuneration in a time of global economic meltdown and declining profits for the firm. GE Healthcare is capable of changing and constantly re-inventing itself to deal with changing business needs. Setting new standards for management, organizational design, Research and Development has been the pillar of the firm. This is evidenced by the establishment of the six distinctive business units stated above. Exploiting the resources that the firm has, this competency can be meant un-substitutable. This quality is rare and not easily imitated. This organizational culture ensures that employees continue with innovation and development of new ideas. The firm has a global orientation, with production facilities outside the US and UK, a wider customer base, a superior brand, sales, marketing, IT and Production departments within every modality. This ensures efficiency of service within each business unit. To ensure financial accountability in outsourcing and procurement, decisions regarding this are handled by offices at the headquarters. General Electric is a well known Brand with a global touch. This strong internal structure has been at the core of the firms success. External Analysis Competitor Analysis Analysts argue that competitors can ensure that similar firms remain productive. Though this can be healthy for consumers, small competitors and substitute product can drive giants out of the market. Siemens AG competes against GE group in communications, power, transportation, medical, and lighting industries. Siemens and HE Healthcare are most competitive in the healthcare industry. Siemens Medical Solutions happens to be largest supplier of healthcare equipment globally. Siemens AG is distinctive in its innovativeness and provision of complete solutions to its customers. Siemens is actually larger, with close to 440,000 employees, 70,000 of which are located in the U.S. Despite the fact that GE Healthcare outdoes Siemens AG in healthcare ($9.4 billion) and energy ($15.3 billion) it is a competitor that cannot be ignored. The success of GE Healthcare lies at how best it chooses its business focus. There is need to focus on a specific market niche. Too much diversification and provision of a wide variety of products may be a step forward but it can also become a mechanism for reversal. Much diversification can lead to lose of business focus. It is evident that new technology and the creation of a global virtual market offer an opportunity for the firm to grow its business. African and some Asian markets are still virgins to the firm. There is need to identify and exploit this business markets. Where favorable, establish production facilities. Advertising and strategic marketing remains a superior option to strengthen the firms brand identity. With increasing human rights concerns and demands for accountability, there is need for education and corporate social responsibility, as consumers are becoming more sensitive to scientific infor mation. World is growing with lightening speed to become a global village, business horizons are widening their wings to take over every street of the world, no matter how different market style is, how different cultural barriers are. Different customs, norms, language, gender are crucial issues for any individual, team, or organization. We are focusing about women facing problems at international assignments. This for sure affects the success of women who work across borders. Gender perspective varies a lot across time, culture. There are some countries like Sweden with low gender discrimination and on other hand its Japan with very high gender discrimination. Different cultural environments, cultural beliefs, and attitudes significantly impact gender expectations and govern much of the interactions and interpretations that occur between men n women. It came to known by a survey that more women are sent to work on international assignments than men, but the question arises, aren’t the challenges faced by women the same as those for men†¦? Is working in Australia is same as working in India? The first problem faced by women on international assignment is the cultural difference. Where in male dominating business world n environment it’s hard for a lady to be acceptable as a decision maker. Clients will not do business with women in the way they would with a man. Especially in the Middle East countries where boys have to be boys and girls to be girls, one has got to play along with it. One have to be respectful in order to get their respect, and noting that women need to be â€Å"very mature† in their behavior. Women, who want to lead in business, have a family knot with them. The first question, an owner going to think prior to appointing an assignment, is she a lady with family, and the amount of travel she can carry along? Whereas men can easily be mobile for international assignments. It is as well a cultural attitude toward the role of women in child-rearing and family life which play a role in this shortfall. It is difficult for women to take expats routes than men but the paradox is that women have more of communication skills n qualities that companies require for today’s business world. In ancient societies men were a symbol of strength and protection, they used to go out either for hunting or for protection and keeping out the outsiders n women were used to trade and provide services. Now we are moving into a period where couples have to care for a wider range of things. Companies need a better understanding of relationships and wider management through teams rather than through dominant male hierarchies. Women care about relationships a lot more than men do, which makes them better at management because they are better at recognizing emotions, voracity and other people’s needs, which on average, makes women better at working in teams. But, on the other hand, it is generally more difficult for a female to sever the relationships she’s established and take-off for another country. Another issue for women is when the accompanying spouse is a man. On average the male is the person in the highest position in society and it gets much more difficult to get the guy to follow the woman as the trailing spouse. In many countries it is more difficult for female expats because they may have to accommodate their males’ egos. In male-dominated societies, the trailing male spouse does not want to feel inadequate. So what companies should do to help women carry their international path. First and foremost, they should find the person qualified to fit the clients’ needs and then HR ensures that qualified women are part of those short term assignment. Specially when a female employee is to send to the Middle East she has to be able to cope with the cultural complexity. Whereas, the younger women generation is much more capable than the fifty years old generation. We need to bring these women up; we have successful female role models, which helps bring about change. Women should get international assignments like any one else because it is a great way of developing as well as being essential for their careers.

As a child there was only one place I could describe as my home away from home. That place was my grandmothers. My Mimi’s has always been the true meaning of safe haven to me. Specifically, when I am in my Mimi’s kitchen I am engulfed with that welcomed comfort and serenity I can find nowhere else. The kitchen’s bar holds memories of a child sitting on it and being told all about life and the ways of the world, while the cabinets hold all kinds of cooking utensils that have been used to make food for family and fellowship, and then there is the fridge that, with all its photographs and family recipes magnetized on it, show a sense of family and tradition. Ann Jones’, or Mimi as most call her, kitchen is not a place known by many. It is a well-kept secret among family and is a sight to behold. This space has a wooden bar that surrounds the entire room. When you look at this bar it is plain to see that it is not unique in any way, but if you look deeper than its exterior view the cuts from a knife a woman used for chopping vegetables, while she educated her granddaughter on the ways of the world, can be seen clear as day. There are deep indentions from when she would lose her concentration in her chopping by becoming so enticed with talking to her only granddaughter. To some this bar is much more than ordinary. When looking at these tools, it is plain to see that they have all been used numerous times for cooking many different meals. Though all meals are made with love and secret recipes, it is those two kinds of cooking that leaves a mark that all of these pots, pans, and other kitchen tools show. Covering all sides of the fridge, many different pictures and recipes can be seen. It is this that gives the kitchen its sense of tradition and the warm feeling of family. The photos vary between all the people who pass by and stop for a visit. It is these people who are called family, whether they have the same blood or not. The recipes are where the tradition can be found. Some passed down for years and some newly acquired, but all have a purpose in the growing background and tradition that is being built in that very kitchen. My Mimi’s kitchen is old-timey and is has had no new or modern updates done to it. It certainly will not be winning any awards for best dà ©cor any time soon. Though it can be seen as ordinary in some ways, my Mimi’s kitchen has a very unique atmosphere and background. His parents divorced when he was little and he grew up with neither of his parents. Handel Essay George Friedrich Handel was one of the most accomplished Baroque composers inhis time. Born in Halle, Germany in 1685, he was the son of a wealthy barber whowanted his son to become a lawyer. However, he displayed such musical aptitudewith the harpsichord, organ, oboe, counterpoint and fugue, he became anassistant with Friedrich Zachav, organist of the cathedral of Halle. However,Handel entered the University of Halle, but quickly withdrew, and left for theUniversity of Hamburg, to study music. In 1706, Handel journeyed to Italy tofurther enhance his music. While there, he was greatly influenced by AlessandroScarlatti and Arcangelo Corelli. Then in 1710, Handel was appointedKapellmeister, or Musical Director, to the Elector of Hanover, andreceived a commission to write an opera for London. Italian opera was all therage in London, and Handels soon became a quick success. However, Handelgreatly longed for being in England, and returned in 1712. London provided agenerous audience for Ha ndel, and from 1712 to 1741 he produced thirty-sixoperas. In 1713, Te Deum and a Jubilate was performed by Handel at St. PaulsCathedral, London, to celebrate the Peace of Utrecht. Queen Anne also grantedHandel a handsome lifetime pension of two hundred pounds per year. IncludingWater Music, for George I, which was first performed in 1715 on the Thames atLondon. While most of Handels operas were based on either historical,mythological, or legendary subjects, Serse, was one of his rare endeavors intocomedy. Handels operas were all sung in Italian, and adhere to the musicalconventions of the day. There is little use of choruses or large ensembles,since one of the main objectives of this genre, called opera seria, is thedemonstration of vocal ability by individual singers. Also, for 18th centuryaudiences, the main attraction in Handels operas lay in the incredible featsof the castrati, male singers whose soprano voices had been surgicallypreserved from childhood. These artists combined the soprano voices of women andthe lung power of men, producing singers whose vocal feats became legendary. InEngland, Handel tried to start opera companies on a number of occasions, butthese attempts to become a music executive failed miserably. On account thegradual decline in popularity of Italian opera in England, Handel turned towriting oratorios, which became the preferred taste. These works, sung inEnglish, take their texts from the Bible. Handels most famous oratorio, hisbest-known work in any genre, is Messiah, written in 1742. In addition to operasand oratorios, he wrote passions, secular choral pieces, anthems, cantatas,chamber sonatas, harpsichord suites, concerti, and orchestral pieces. Beyondcomposition, Handel was the first the real businessman in the world of music. Hehad a hand in organizing opera companies, obtaining financial support, andfinding singers. He was also in constant demand at parties where he entertainedguests with his lusty personality and exceptional abilities the keyboard. Of allcomposers, Handel was probably the most esteemed and appreciated in his owntime. He rose to a position of the highest eminence in the musical world. Hisoratorios were the toast of the country, and of the continent as well. Towardthe end of his life, Handel was plagued by ill health. From 1753, he was totallyblind, though this did not stop his activities altogether. He died in 1759, andwas buried with full state honors in Westminster Abbey.
